What is a microgrid?
A microgrid is an automated, self-sufficient energy system within a defined site or footprint. The microgrid connects all distributed energy resources (DER), including EV’s, PV solar, battery energy storage systems and wind turbines, as well as the grid, to the load.
The microgrid is set up to understand the site’s energy utility tariff cost structure and will optimise the use of DER to minimise the energy cost of the site, while enhancing power performance, sustainability and reliability. A microgrid can operate using the grid, or in Island Mode, where the grid is effectively isolated from the site.
The microgrid can be configured to consider incoming weather system reports, and where it determines there is a risk to power availability at the site, it then switches into Island Mode prior to the weather system impacting the site and potentially triggering a grid outage.
With a microgrid controlling the site’s energy source usage, it will ensure that the grid is used at low-cost times to charge up a BESS to store energy, and that sustainable sources such a PV solar and BESS are used to power the load at other times when the grid is more expensive. It will also feed energy back into the grid to generate energy rebates for the site when there is excess PV solar generation. A fully integrated microgrid will significantly improve the energy cost profile of your business, lowering your energy bills.
